Tega Cay Real Estate and Homes - History

Before the first white settlers started communities along the Catawba River, the Catawba Tribe and other Native Americans cultivated the territories now known as Mecklenburg and Gastonia counties.  In the mid 1700's, German and Scotch-Irish settlers came into the region, creating communities along the banks of the Catawba River.  Most of the communities in the area depended on the textile industries and mills, plantations, and farms cropped-up all around what is now Charlotte metropolitan.

When railroads were constructed in the area during the 1800's, they helped to boost the economy and bring new businesses, new settlements, and more people to the region.  As the 1900's rolled around, the new technologies of electricity and hydroelectric power were spreading across the country.

A North Carolina native who grew up by the Catawba River, seized the chance to organize a power company and build hydroelectric dams along the Catawba River and other rivers in the surrounding area.  In 1904, Dr. Wylie and the company that would later be known as the Duke Power Company dammed the Catawba River, near Indiana Hook, South Carolina, creating Lake Catawba.

Nearly 20 years after creating Lake Catawba, Duke Power Company decided to replace the hydroelectric dam with a larger one.  The hydroelectric station helped to increase the size of Lake Catawba from a small 2.7 square kilometer surface area, to a sizable 54 square kilometers.  The hydroelectric station and the lake itself would be renamed after Dr. Wylie in 1960.

In 1970, a man by the name of Charlie Erwin purchased the peninsula that is now known as Tega Cay. Erwin named the city after the Tahitian phrase, “Tega Cay” which translates to “beautiful peninsula.”  In 1982, Tega Cay was incorporated, sharing the same date as the country's date of independence.  Since being incorporated, efforts have been made to develop the planned-city into one of North Carolina's best cities.
